The hit Netflix horror starring Sandra Bullock sees a world where survivors have to keep blindfolded to avoid seeing monsters that cause people to die by suicide. Fans of the film have taken part in the so-called Bird Box Challenge, which involves attempting challenges while wearing a blindfold. And accord to police in Layton, Utah, a crash took place when a 17-year-old girl was attempting the challenge while driving. According to KSL.com, the collision happened just before 5pm on Monday on the Layton Parkway.
One Lieutenant said: “Apparently, as a part of this Bird Box Challenge, [the driver] used her beanie to pull over her eyes as she was driving on Layton Parkway.
“And she ended up losing control of her car and skidded into the westbound lanes of Layton Parkway and hit another car and ended up hitting a light pole as well.”
It’s reported the 17-year-old girl was driving a pickup truck with a 16-year-old passenger.
Originally she told police that she had got distracted when talking to her friend.
Netflix wrote: “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.
“We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
Bird Box has been a huge success for the subscription service, which has claimed that over 45 million accounts streamed the film in its first seven days on release.
That’s the first time Netflix has ever revealed a specific number for any of its content.
